Sony has just released a new firmware update for 3D Games. They will be releasing another one later this summer for 3D Blu-Ray. The PS3 is already defying the need for HDMI 1.4 so there is a good chance the PS3 could take any TV that has at least a 120 Hz refresh rate and make it show 3D content.
PS3Hype writes: ‘In only 5 weeks, God Of War 3 sold more than 2 million copies around the world. Now it’s one of the many PS3 exclusives that sold more than a million copies. Also SOCOM Confrontation made it this week to that list. It sold in more than 6 months 1 million copies. Then we only count the blu-ray sales and not the PSN sales.’
When the PS3 launched back in 2006, many a journalist and naysayers alike proclaimed the doom of Sony’s black behemoth. They said including Blu-ray as part of the PS3’s package didn’t make much sense and that it would only raise the price of an already expensive console.
But guess who’s laughing now? Ironically, one of Sony’s main selling point for PS3 right now is that its Blu-ray compatibility.
According to aggregate weekly estimates from the research department of Home Media Magazine and listed each week on blu-ray.com’s sales information posts, revenues from BD sales in the US in the first quarter of 2010 were $331.31 million, 68.5% more than in the same period of 2009. Blu-ray accounted for 12.3% of packaged-media sales revenue in the first three months of the year (versus 7.0% in Jan-Mar 2009).
Let’s face it folks, prior to 2009, Playstation 3 had some rocky and rough times. Even though it had superior technology with blu-ray formatting and the best exclusive line up of games, it was still being out sold by the Wii and the 360 week by week.
This all changed on August 19, 2009.
CVG: Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg has claimed that Xbox 360 has "nearly twice" PS3’s worldwide installed base – partly because its lack of a Blu-Ray drive allows it to be sold at a more attractive price point.
Microsoft’s Albert Penello tells News10 that gamers who want Xbox 360 blu-ray capabilities should "go spend $150" on a stand-alone player.
Contract prices for Blu-Ray machines are falling as the industry misses the point about what is putting on the brakes for the technology.
Digitimes reports that Contract-manufacturing quotes for PC-use Blu-ray Disk drives have dropped to $70-80. This is still much higher than the $20 for DVD drives, but is falling fast. However makers of Blu-ray machines are not finding that the gear is shifting at anywhere near the high numbers required for the technology to take off.
t seems Final Fantasy XIII has been forever under development, 4 years will make anything feel like forever. But it’s all over now, the game’s out in the west and Square-Enix felt the need to celebrate; who wouldn’t?
