Release of the Week: Skate 3 (360, PS3)

Posted by admin On May - 10 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

With each iteration of the Skate franchise, the game becomes less “that other skating game” and more of a serious competitor with Activision’s Tony Hawk games. When Tony Hawk: Ride was release with its skateboard peripheral, it definitely raised some eyebrows. This gives the Skate series the opportunity to convert some fans who still want to play from the couch. Will Skate 3 deliver or fall and skin its knees?

The first two Skate games took place in San Vanelona, a city full of angry police who treated skaters like the plague. Skate 3 is ditching this bummer of a city for the more relaxed and skater friendly Port Carverton. Rather then rebelling against the man, Skate 3 is all about starting up your own board company. The career mode will be all about building your companies brand and selling some boards. The more challenges you complete the more your brand gets noticed and better your company does.

If you struggled in past Skate games, don’t worry. That has been addressed along with the grumpy San Vanelona. Not only are there three difficulty levels now, but Port Caverton has less litter for you to get hung up on. Additionally you have the ability to yell at people and get them out of your way. This should help prevent the frequent botched tricks as a result of running into people or hitting loose soda cans. A tutorial in the form of Skate School should also help out the uninitiated.

Playing online is a big part of Skate 3. It is actually possible to play your entire career online in coop mode with friends. After all, skating just isn’t as fun when you are by yourself. Additionally, any custom characters created by your friends will make their way into your game. You will occasionally see AI versions of your friends skating around town, which is a nice touch.

If Skate 3 has learned from its mistakes in the past, then this could be the best skating game this generation. My biggest concern is the serious lack of helmets. Those avatars are doing some crazy stunts and will probably be falling down a lot. They really need to protect their heads. Safety first!

Critical Gamer: Devil’s Tuning Fork – PAX East Interview with Jason Pecho

Posted by admin On April - 9 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Critical Gamer writes: The great thing about interviewing a developer of an indie game is that we can point you in the direction of a new, free game to play. Devil’s Tuning Fork is just such a game (and you can get it here: devilstuningfork.com). But it won’t always be that way if budding developer Jason Pecho and his team get their way. This IGF Student Showcase winner is getting a ton of buzz, and deservedly so – it’s awesome! At PAX East, we had a chance to speak with Mr. Pecho, project lead on the game, about the inspiration, challenges, and future goals for this clever first-person puzzle game.

18 WHEELS OF DANGER ON PSP

Posted by admin On March - 11 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Slitherine is proud to announce the release of HISTORY Ice Road Truckers on PSP Minis. The game launches today as downloadable game on the PSN store.  Players who take command of these huge 18-wheelers will drive their way across ice roads in one of five big rigs.

The Ice Road Truckers is a racing game that captures the spirit and danger of the series by putting players in the driver’s seat of an eighteen wheeler. Players face a number of challenges as they haul equipment and supplies to isolated outposts north of the Arctic Circle.

In all, there are fifteen ice roads to master.  Virtual truckers will need to steer clear of other trucks and thin ice hazards throughout the game.  Stay on the road, avoid obstacles, and reach the destination before time runs out. Quicker times earn you more money, but if you’re late you won’t advance !!

Posted by admin On December - 23 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

It has been months since Windows 7’s successor has entered the planning and early development stages, and already Microsoft is taking aim at its competition deep inside its headquarters. At least two of them, Apple and Google, are being scrutinized especially closely, according to sources within the company. Despite the strong start Windows 7 has had, and Windows’ huge installed base, the company realizes that there are new challenges in the changing marketplace that have to be met head-on if the Windows brand is to continue to flourish.

Edge Interview: Designer’s Creed

Posted by admin On December - 1 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

"Ubisoft Montreal has succeeded in welding a game to what once felt like a proof of concept," we said in our review of Assassin’s Creed II, and the many bountiful changes the title has seen over its anaemic predecessor can be placed at the feet of its lead designer, Patrick Plourde.

A veteran of Ubisoft Montreal, beginning as a level designer on Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Lockdown and later serving as one of a team of designers on the original Assassin’s Creed, Plourde oversaw the design of Assassin’s Creed II and was instrumental in the decisions to add many of the things which changed the face of the series. In this interview we discuss with Plourde his aims for the game, the changes made from the original, and the challenges he faced working on a project which at one point consumed the efforts of over three hundred developers. Oh, and a little detail about Desmond’s less than interactive roots.
