Microsoft Patents Method of Automating DLC Purchases

Posted by admin On March - 14 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Broke My Controller Writes:

You’re on Xbox LIVE and a friend asks you to join in for some Modern Warfare multiplayer. Unfortunately, you never purchased the new map pack DLC. A recently published patent application by Microsoft shows off an automated system for purchasing DLC through a prompt that comes up as you accept an invite that requires content you don’t have.

According to the patent, you will remain partied up, and rather than having to go to the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, you will be given the option to purchase and install the content automatically.

VGC Mass Effect 2 – Kasumi’s Stolen Memory Preview

The pricing on this new DLC has yet to be determined, but it looks like a very enjoyable package. Assuming the price isn’t exorbitantly high for this relatively short experience, this first DLC package will be a welcome addition to Mass Effect 2.

Is Take Two double dipping with BioShock 2 DLC?

Posted by admin On March - 12 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

When fans first heard word that they were going to get an opportunity to return to Rapture, the masses rejoiced. Not only was BioShock 2 the sequel to one of the biggest surprise hits of this console generation, but it also took a stab at bringing the franchise’s trademark flare to the multiplayer front. Many gamers, myself included, asked why the developers would try to sully what was such an overwhelmingly strong single player experience, by attempting to transfer that magic to a multiplayer arena.

Those that cried foul about the multiplayer initially seem to actually have a reason to complain now, as the recently released Sinclair Solutions Tester Pack DLC may be noting more than a glorified unlock code.

The pack, which costs 400 Microsoft Points (about £3.40) weighs in at 108kb on Xbox 360, and just 24kb on PC, both of which are so small it would seem to suggest it’s simply an unlock key to open content that already exists on the game disc.  — Via CVG.com

So this raises the question, do you think it is okay for publishers to re-charge you for material that is already on your game disc?  I am going to have to say that this is incredibly wrong, but we are curious what you all think.  Let us know what you think in the comments below.

God of War III uses only 50% of PS3’s power, said the Game Director

Posted by admin On March - 12 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

In a recent interview for UGDB the Game Director of God of War III Stig Asmussen said: "I don’t know is we are even close to 50% of PlayStation 3’s power at this point."

In another question related to what parts of the game were ripped off and are not in the final version, Stig is talking for the first time ever for character named Exion, Cyclops as nearly big as titans, and one huge titan encounter that can come in the form of DLC. Stig is also talking for his dream project, who might play Kratos in God of War movie, what experiments the studio has tried with the save system, what to expect form the upcoming six-issue comic book, and when we should meet Kratos’ brother.

Bad Company 2 Expanding Post-Release

Posted by admin On February - 25 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Downloadable content is becoming about as prevalent in gaming as violated alter boys in the the Catholic church. Hardly a title sees release nowadays without falling victim to the cold, unwelcome and unrelenting grip of cut content, quietly sneaking its way in through the backdoor of a game. Much to the chagrin of gamers on all platforms, this rapid adoption of a post-release content infusion has also led to the bloating costs of said content.

Lucky for all of us, the team behind DICE’s upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company 2 have heard our cries and decided to take a page from the history of their previous Battlefield titles on the PC, releasing multiple pieces of FREE DLC, long after the game has hit store shelves.

DICE, today announced that two massive, all-new multiplayer maps for Battlefield: Bad Company™ 2 will be unlocked on March 2nd when the game launches in North America. This map pack features the Laguna Alta map playable in Conquest mode and Nelson Bay map playable in Rush mode, bringing the total number of multiplayer maps up to 10. Later in March, DICE will release yet another map pack at no extra charge, giving players a chance to experience the Arica Harbor map in Conquest mode and Laguna Presa map in Rush mode. — via EA.com

It should also be mentioned that if you were to purchase a copy of the game secondhand, you will still have the chance to get your grubby little mitts on this content, but will will cost you an additional fifteen bones or whatever the equivalent is in “Microsoft Spacebucks.”

I think that extended support of a game like this can go a long way towards both curbing the returns of a game to secondhand redistribution and also encourages people to buy new copies.  Let’s just hope that nothing was pulled out of the original game, to facilitate the need for DLC.
