Reviewing Games – The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Posted by admin On April - 24 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

DualShockers writes, "For many out there, being able to review games is a dream job. In my younger days, I always looked up to game reviewers, which I really only had access to through print media in magazines like Nintendo Power and Electronic Gaming Monthly. As time progressed and the Internet became more and more popular, there was an explosion of video-game-related sites popping up everywhere and, so it seemed, everyone and their mother was writing game reviews, for better or for worse.

Some are paid to write, some do it because they enjoy it, some aren’t gamers but journalists forced to play and write in this industry – needless to say, there is a wide variety of people out there right now reviewing games. Who are you to believe? What qualifies them to review a game? How long should they play a game before giving their opinions to thousands of people across the Internet? Is it really a dream job?"

Latest MAG Reviews Lack Credibility

Posted by admin On January - 25 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

NextGN writes: "We are starting to see MAG (Massive Action Game) reviews surface around the web. It may not seem so strange considering the game is due out for release tomorrow (26th of January) in the U.S.A and three days later in Europe, but the truth is that all of this so-called "reviews" cannot be based on anything other than the BETA since the officials servers don´t go live until the eve of the release day."

SMG looks at nine top review sites: Who’s the most biased?

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Edge magazine’s reviews show most 360 bias while IGN seems to prefer PS3 and Wii.

It’s no surprise that game reviews can be contentious issues. Few fan bases are as passionate as gamers. Anytime you introduce opinion into the mix you’re more than likely to have someone with the exact opposite view as you. Many gamers have cried foul on internet forums when they see their favorite titles receive less than stellar reviews or see games they personally don’t care for achieve scores they feel the title is undeserving of. Often the review scores will simply be written off as "Oh, that’s Gamespot. They don’t like anything on the Console X."

SMG decided to test that idea to see if there was any credibility to it. We reviewed review sample scores from 9 well known publications to see if there was any evidence of a bias displayed.

The sites under the microscope were as follows: Edge, IGN, Gamespot, 1up, GameTrailers, Eurogamer, Gamepro, CheatCodeCentral and Gamespy.

Posted by admin On April - 2 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Unappreciated games are not exactly hard to come by. Frequently cited examples include Okami, Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil, among others. These are all fantastic games that didn’t really sell to the masses, instead losing in sales to yet another Imagine Babyz game.

But what about the unappreciated games from series that, in some way, are very much appreciated, or at least well known? The forgotten entries that deserved much more recognition than they received. While this list is nowhere near complete, it gives a taster of some of these games time forgot. Call this part one of The Game Reviews’ underappreciated games from well-known series.
