Scott Pilgrim XBLA Review

Posted by admin On August - 26 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Scott Pilgrim: The Game is made to appeal to your sense of nostalgia. A beat-em-up in the vein of old 8- and 16-bit classics with a purposefully pixelated art style, your mission is simply to get from one end of the map to the other while beating the crap out of everyone who gets in your way. And, for a game that celebrates the simple pleasure of button-mashing, it’s highly effective.

The game effortlessly weaves together nerd-culture references (from Super Mario Bros. to Akira) with levels and playstyle created to remind you of games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and River City Ransom. Miniscule background animations and character details ensure that, even when you’re just wailing away on clones of enemies you’ve seen in every other level, they all look distinct. And like RCR (or more recently, Castle Crashers) you also level up your character — earning new powers, greater strength, and more incentive to keep going, the further along you go.

SPECULATION: What We Want For Battlefield 3

Posted by admin On August - 7 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Battlefield 3, long rumored, is finally on its way. We always assumed DICE was secretly tinkering with this while making the Battlefield Bad Company series, and while there’s been off-the-cuff remarks from ex-DICE personnel, EA itself hasn’t formally acknowledged the game until last week’s announcement of the BF3 beta being bundled with the limited edition of Medal of Honor. But that’s all that’s been said about it — so we’re still pretty much in the dark as to what we’ll get with Battlefield 3.

All we know is that BF3 seems to be a multi-platform release (by virtue of being bundled with Medal of Honor), so it will not only be on PC, but also on PS3 and 360. That, and it’s likely to use the Frostbite 2.0 engine (as good as Bad Company 2 was, it was still technically Frostbite one-point-something). So it’s safe to expect even more destructible terrain, and perhaps better tools for supporting more user-mods on PC. But what else do we actually want in it? In basic terms: a delightful blend of Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 2. Basically, we want the aesthetics and destruction of BC2 with the scope and scale of BF2. At the moment, we’re going to roll with a near-future setting; even though BC2 does a pretty good job with the modern-to-future gear, we’d like those aesthetics to be brought into a deeper and more interesting game in BF3. Anyhow, here are some more of our humble suggestions to DICE.

Xfire Sold, Development Team Departing

Posted by admin On August - 3 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

It appears that the popular freeware messaging service Xfire is under new ownership. In a message posted on the front page, the development team announced that the company has been sold, and that the majority of the team is leaving.

The message written by one member of the development team reads, “Xfire has been purchased by another company. Most of the team that has brought you Xfire for the last 6 years is leaving, including me. We’ve enjoyed our time and I personally am sad that I was only able to do 127 releases. Good bye and game on!”

Xfire was founded in 2002 by former pro gamer Dennis “Thresh” Fong, who has since gone on to create Raptr. The company was acquired by Viacom in 2006, and currently boasts 16 million registered users.
