Review: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (XBLA)

Posted by admin On August - 18 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

If there are any video game mascots that stand above the rest, it’s hard to argue that Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable. Many gamers sang praises of Tomb Raider’s protagonist as they followed her adventures on the original Sony PlayStation. Several years passed, development changed hands and the Tomb Raider series seemed [...]

Review: Castlevania Harmony of Despair (XBLA)

Posted by admin On August - 10 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Some games stay with you years after they’ve run their course. These games are often referred to as classics. The tale of Castlevania definitely fits this mold that calls back a time when some of the older gamers among us recall grasping an NES controller while Simon Belmont dispatched the armies of undead. 24 years later, Konami once again brings us back to the world of Vampires in a very different way…

Sega Posts $80.8 Million Quarterly Profit

Posted by admin On August - 1 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Sega LogoAt the end of a week that saw both Nintendo and — especially — Capcom report big drops in profit for the first fiscal quarter of the year (ending June 30), Sega has now also reported their own numbers, and surprise-surprise, it’s actually good news…kind of. Despite disappointing sales from two of their more high-profile releases, Sega still saw a profit of 7 billion yen ($80.8 million), although much of it was due to their pachinko business in Japan.

Sega reports that Alpha Protocol and Iron Man 2 both recorded sluggish sales, with the former selling 700,000 units globally and the latter only slightly better at 1.12 million units (via Industry Gamers). “While domestic sales were mostly firm, in the overseas markets, sales of new titles remained slow as affected by the adverse market condition,” Sega said.

Despite this statement, though, Sega actually saw most of their game sales in the quarter coming from overseas, with 1.68 million units sold in North America, 1.33 million in Europe, and only 270,000 in Japan (for a worldwide total of 3.29 million units sold).

Rockstar Fixing "Invisibility" Red Dead Redemption Bug

Red Dead Redemption

Tons of gamers are enjoying Red Dead Redemption following its release earlier this week, but it looks like more than a few are having their experience hampered by some screwy glitches. Gamers are reporting issues, particularly in multiplayer games, where a player’s gun, horse, or even entire character disappears from the screen. Now Rockstar says (via Kotaku) they’re aware of the issues and are working to resolve them.

“[We're] really happy with how well Red Dead Redemption has been received by the community on both platforms so far. We’re aware of the issues some people are experiencing on multiplayer and we’re working hard to fix them,” a Rockstar rep said. “If you’re having issues please email RDRSupportteam@rockstargames.com. We are also actively on the forums helping people with any questions they may have about the game. Thank you all for your support and we look forward to getting a fix out as soon as we can.”

There are already various YouTube videos documenting these glitches, which would probably be a lot funnier if they weren’t so annoying for players who just bought their brand-new $60 game. In addition to disappearing horses and characters, some players have also reported being attacked by invisible cougars.

New Yakuza Game Named, Dated

Kurohyo

The newest project from Toshihiro Nagoshi, Sega stalwart and director of the company’s Yakuza, has a real name now.

Nagoshi revealed in Japanese game magazines this week that his latest project, a PSP game unofficially titled “Project K” until now, is now named Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinshou, which we’ll loosely translate as “Black Leopard: A New Yakuza Chapter.” The game also has an official release date now — September 22 in Japan — and Sega’s announced that gamers who preorder the title over there will receive a copy of “Young Kamutai Magazine,” a fictional travel guide to the game’s equally fictional fictional setting of Kamurocho.

As discussed earlier, Kurohyou is a new action game that borrows Yakuza’s setting to tell a story about Japan’s modern underground street punks. Kengo Kora, a Japanese actor who’s appeared in lots of films over there, will provide the voice of hero Ryuya Ukyo.

As Blizzard announces that the Battle.net servers for Starcraft 2 will be split by region, Classy Gamer elaborates on the problem of "Gamer Segregation".

We interact and play on a globalized internet that allows us to connect with other gamers all over the world in a matter of seconds, but some game developers still stubbornly split their communities with antiquate regional barriers.

Reviewing Games – The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Posted by admin On April - 24 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

DualShockers writes, "For many out there, being able to review games is a dream job. In my younger days, I always looked up to game reviewers, which I really only had access to through print media in magazines like Nintendo Power and Electronic Gaming Monthly. As time progressed and the Internet became more and more popular, there was an explosion of video-game-related sites popping up everywhere and, so it seemed, everyone and their mother was writing game reviews, for better or for worse.

Some are paid to write, some do it because they enjoy it, some aren’t gamers but journalists forced to play and write in this industry – needless to say, there is a wide variety of people out there right now reviewing games. Who are you to believe? What qualifies them to review a game? How long should they play a game before giving their opinions to thousands of people across the Internet? Is it really a dream job?"
