Ubisoft is the latest publisher to sign with Virgin Gaming, an online tournament provider that was unveiled during E3. The service will be providing tournaments for games like the upcoming Ghost Recon Future Soldier.

In addition to the Ubisoft catalog, Virgin Gaming currently supports tournaments for games like Halo 3, ModNation Racers and MLB 10: The Show. They plan to give away more than $1 million in cash and prizes over the service’s first 12 months.

“Virgin Gaming is a unique convergence of social networking, video games and competitive gaming, and we are excited that Ubisoft shares our vision for the platform and its potential,” CEO Rob Segal said in an official statement.

The Halo: Reach multiplayer beta ended just days ago and already we’ve learned of the full game’s release date: September 14. That release date applies worldwide with the exception of Japan, where it’ll be out a day later.

The news was made in spectacularly quiet fashion, hidden in a press release (via MCV) about the impressive turnout the Reach beta saw. More than 16 million hours were played in the beta by 2.7 million people, amassing 1.1 billion kills in that period of time.

“It’s exceeded our expectations,” said Bungie community director Brian Jarrard. “Our only real perspective going into this was the Halo 3 beta test, which had about 800,000 people. We knew there were a couple million copies of ODST out there, but we really didn’t have any specific information that let us know what the population might be like.”

Yeah, that’s right. The best game this week is only an open beta. I have made this decision for two reasons. First of all, nothing really notable is coming out other than the Iron Man 2 movie tie in and I don’t like movie games. Secondly, if you have ever been a Halo fan, then this is what you will be playing for the next couple weeks.

While ODST acted more as a supplement to Halo 3, Reach is essentially Halo 4. New maps, new modes and a new(ish) health system are all things that you are going to want to try out before the game is released later this year. Beyond that, Reach will include stealth, jump packs and assassinations. If you are a Halo fan then I’m sure that you already know all about the beta. However, as the Beta started today, I am also sure that you are probably too busy playing the beta to even be bothered read this article.

Just in case you have been living under a rock, you will need have a  copy of Halo: ODST to get into the Beta. From there, you just access the beta from extras menu on campaign disk. Simple as that. Makes me wonder why Modern Warfare 2 never had a beta…

Infernocide has announced the full release of its Halo Infernal Map Pack mod, now available for download. The pack adds 11 new multiplayer maps to Halo: CE including some Halo 2 and Halo 3 maps.

Following the rumoured information yesterday regarding Halo: Reach receiving the Standard, Limited and Legendary editions that Halo 3 did, Bungie have today officially unveiled that such information is indeed true – even including pictures for fans to drool a little over.

Microsoft launched a major marketing blitz for last year’s Halo 3: ODST, but Bungie community director Brian Jarrard said to expect marketing on an even grander scale for the upcoming Halo Reach.

Bungie’s FPS Halo 3 is now available for download on Xbox Live.
