Blu-ray vs DVD: Is it only a matter of disc swapping?
As more games fully utilizing the whole storage potential of the Blu-ray hit the shelves, the gaming community is startly to wonder if the DVD-9 is still a viable format to support the most advanced AAA releases.
A comparison between the pros and cons of the Blu-ray solution on PS3 and DVD-9 one on the Xbox 360.
Girls Are Evil
I’ve never been one to identify with the “victim” mentality. I try to live my life in a way that what happened to me doesn’t define me. That being said, it’s been a really hard week for me. As someone who has been sexually assaulted, I try to steer clear of anything that would bring back memories of what happened. Since I live, breathe and sleep gaming that usually isn’t a problem. Then Tuesday morning comes and as I log into my Twitter account (@MetalGearBAE) to find it flooded with articles on a game called ‘Rapelay’ by Illusion.
And of course, people are outraged. The game was banned and pulled off shelves only to have it garner so much attention that it went viral. As I read the articles and watch the videos I am utterly disgusted. My stomach actually flips over. I sweat. My eyes well up. I can’t get it out of my mind.
As I sit here on Thursday afternoon I realize that instead of waking up early like normal, I’ve slept in until late in the day both days since this news story became so popular. I’ve just HAD to get outside, to see the sun and not feel trapped. And I want to get away. Far, far away from my life right now and I really have nothing to run from. Besides being disabled, (and I’ll save all that mess for another column) I love my life and everyone in it. I’m blessed to have a wonderful family and a great set of friends.
So what’s the problem?
I realize that I feel victimized all over again.
There is my outrage over this game.
For anyone- man or woman who has been assaulted, it is always there with you. The fear and anxiety is always lurking in the background even when you move on and I am amazed that someone would find it fun to rape women over and over in a video game. Or maybe I’m not amazed. The world seems to be turning into something I’m not proud of lately.
People are angry because they believe that someone will play this game and go on a raping spree.
To me, that’s the same as saying someone will play GTA4 and go on a crime spree.
I’m just not buying it. Sure, it happens but those people already had a screw loose. It could have been any trigger that set them off. A word, a movie, television or toast. Crazy is Crazy- you can blame it on what you want.
I’m thinking that ‘Rapelay’s’ developer has never had a mother, sister, wife or friend be assaulted. If they did, they would understand the enormity of what they have done. Maybe it won’t reach millions of women and no one will care. Maybe what they wanted was a massive amount of attention to be able to work on a REAL project. I don’t care about that.
What I care about is the anger that I have at them for thinking this is acceptable entertainment and for making me feel like crap all over again. I wonder about my other gaming friends and how this makes them feel. I wonder if I’m being over dramatic.
Most of all, I wonder what it would be like to see the people at Illusion face to face and how they would feel to see my tears. What would they think about my story?
I’m sure we will never know.

DSi XL Hits US Shelves
Is bigger necessarily better ? The folks at Nintendo seem to think it’s the way to go when it comes to their popular handheld platform. Just as the DS Lite gave way to the Nintendo DSi, the company’s latest handheld is also making waves in the portable community. Launching March 28, the house that Mario built thinks that the new, larger DSi XL hand-held system will make it easier for everyone to gather around and have a good time.
“For some people, good things come in big packages,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Our Nintendo DS family of systems has been going strong since 2004, and this new portable system really lets players enjoy the fun together.”
Nintendo DSi XL will be available at a suggested retail price of $189.99, which includes three titles that have been pre-installed on the system. These include the brain-training games Brain Age Express: Math and Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, as well as Photo Clock, which lets users customize the pictures on the background of their clock. Nintendo DSi XL launches in both Burgundy and Bronze, with a glossy top and a matte-finish bottom for a better grip.
The DSi XL features 4.2-inch screens that are 93 percent larger than those on the Nintendo DS Lite system. The improved wider viewing angle of the Nintendo DSi XL screens also provides a new way for people to enjoy games with friends and family, making it easier than ever to watch and join in the fun. Tech-savvy parents will also discover that the Nintendo DSi XL features parental controls. This lets adults manage the digital content their children can access.
The new handheld includes all the same features as the Nintendo DSi system, including two cameras and photo-and sound-manipulation tools. With a broadband Internet connection, you can also upload photos directly to Facebook to share with friends or access downloadable Nintendo DSiWare games via the Nintendo DSi Shop.

God of War III is Looking Like a Sales Titan
PSLS writes:
God of War III is probably the biggest and most hyped PS3 exclusives to date. Kratos’ epic will without a doubt be a massive financial boost to Sony in terms of both game and console sales (that is if Sony can get some more stock on retailers shelves). However, will the competition from other blockbuster releases in a month already showered with many great games stop Kratos’ fury on the sales charts? Nope. Competition means nothing to Kratos and in the end, there will only be massive sales.
Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening Features Exciting New Cast
resumeplay writes: "Canadian developer BioWare has long been known for its ability to weave deeply designed and thoroughly exciting personalities into the plots and universes it creates for its acclaimed RPGs. The new Awakening expansion project, which will be released to store shelves and be made available as downloadable content (DLC) on March 16, seems set to continue this trend."
New Alan Wake Screenshots
May is almost here, and with it comes the release of Microsoft’s highly anticipated psychological-action thriller, Alan Wake. The game’s protagonist is (surprise!) author Alan Wake, who has caught a spot of writer’s block. To help alleviate his issue, Alan and his wife Alice furlough in the idyllic town of Bright Falls. Soon after their arrival, Alice goes missing and Alan’s nightmare intensifies as his latest work begins to literally come alive around him. We’re sure the devs NEVER read a Stephen King book, right?
The game will feature a full day/night cycle, a semi-free-roam environment, and a television-like episodic format. Look for it on the shelves sometime in May, but, until then, take a look at the screenshots.

FF13 flies off the digital shelves
Following on from Japanese gamers causing Amazon Japan to sell out of copies of Final Fantasy XIII before launch, Importing gamers are now pushing stock to the absolute limit.
An employee of top import store Play Asia told UFFSite the extent of the demand.
"We expected FF13 to be big, but in the last few days before launch we have seen a surge of orders from overseas, with lots of games being despatched to the US. We obtained extra stock and we have shipped more copies of the game than I’d care to count already. We’ll be shipping these all day!"
