PS3’s Warhawk Killed Jaffe’s Heartland, Led to Eat Sleep Play

God of War creator and Eat Sleep Play founder David Jaffe recently spoke on Kotaku’s radio podcast about his canceled PSP game Heartland. The game would have been a first-person shooter designed to bring about strong emotional responses from players, and it would have focused on a subject that many people have very strong feelings about: George W. Bush and his policies.

Giants never sleep, they can’t afford to; competition is too stiff and so one always must keep pushing the envelop to stay ahead. Sony is no exception, and in an attempt to stave off it’s competitors in the gaming industry, the company from the land of the rising sun is reportedly working on a universal controller; capable of being used with Xbox 360 and Nintendo.

Let’s face it, one glance at the charts will show you that the public isn’t too fussed about originality. The public wants first-person shooters, fitness games and the next FIFA or Madden. It doesn’t want LittleBigPlanet (despite Stephen Fry), couldn’t give a damn about Okami despite all our best efforts, and thinks Rez HD is a sleep disorder you get from those newfangled tellies.

But while some games are unoriginal to the point of lawsuits (Simpson’s Road Rage, how do you plead?), there is a lot to be said for a brilliantly-made game that adds little genuinely new to the genre. In fact, some of the best games of the past 12 months have been made up of little more than old ideas cleverly repackaged to create something wonderful.

PSLS writes: "Yesterday, we had reported that David Jaffe’s next game with company Eat Sleep Play, may in fact not be Twisted Metal. Instead, Jaffe made it seem as though the title could be a new IP. Considering how vocal of a fellow he is, it comes as no surprise his personal website has been update to clarify these rumors."

Birth by Sleep continues to rank number one on Amazon.jp when it comes to sales in the Video Games Category, which is quite excellent. Even more surprising however, are the remarkable user reviews – Birth by Sleep has recieved mostly five star reviews.
