Former EyeToy exec warns of the difficulties facing Natal, ‘Arc’

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Jamie MacDonald, former Vice President of Sony Worldwide Studios (the company responsible for EyeToy), gave out a few pointers to Sony and Microsoft regarding their respective motion controllers. MacDonald warned that gamers are expecting more from the 360 and PS3’s motion gaming than they do from the Wii, due to both consoles’ beefier hardware. However, he also warned about implementing "traditional long-form gameplay," lengthy sessions of which would leave players "completely knackered."

In the September issue of Playstation The Official Magazine, Sony’s President of Worldwide Studios made time to answer some questions, from the oft mentioned 10-year cycle, to the importance of Gran Turismo making it’s debut on the PSP.

PTOM: as we sit here three years into a 10-year cycle, what’s your overall feel of what’s been achieved so far, and are we where you envisioned we’d be at this point?

The Top 10 First and Second Party Studios: Sony

Koku Gamer writes: "We started off with Nintendo and their top 10, and a few days ago we gave the same treatment for Microsoft. Now its Sony’s turn. In some ways this was easy to put together but also very difficult, because in the last 15 years Sony’s PlayStation has been on the market, they have acquired many AAA studios. That’s why it was hard. Many of my personal favorite franchises are made by Sony’s first and second party studios. So here we go, here is Sony’s Top 10 first and second party studios."

Sony’s Secret Developer Revealed

Gameplayer recently had a chat with one of the Uncharted 2 developers about their new game engine and discovered the existence of a secret Sony developer.

"I was so impressed with the visual quality of Uncharted 2 we began discussing the game engine, which is called Naught Dog 2.0 by the way. I was curious as to whether or not Sony had urged them to share the engine about the other Sony affiliated studios. It turns out that the engine is all Naughty Dogs, but that there is another secret developer within the Sony family that feeds off all the advancements from internal and second-party studios to chip away on a base set of tools that are utilised across all games. These are constantly refined to maximise the strengths of the PS3."
