Posted by admin On August - 31 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Tron fans can now mark their calendars, as Disney has announced that the upcoming videogame spinoff will be arriving ten days before the film.

Disney also unveiled a sizable collector’s edition, which will retail for $130. The main attraction is a model light cycle, which comes complete with a special display case for the model and a drawer for the game. The collector’s edition will only be available for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game.

Tron Evolution will detail the events taking place between the original film and the upcoming Tron Legacy, which is due in theaters December 17. The film will reference events that take place in the game, but will be their own standalone experiences.

Madden NFL 11 Review

Posted by admin On August - 10 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

The Madden NFL series is in a tough spot. When developer EA Tiburon changes a small detail here or a gameplay mechanic there, it inevitably enrages one set of diehard fans and gets the other half to hop back on the wagon so to speak. This year’s iteration in the more than a decade old series has brought me back into the “drinking the Madden Kool-Aid” fold, because it’s improved the things that matter to me. That said, Madden NFL 11 still needs some improvement.

The thing that first struck me when I booted up a game was the revamped broadcast presentation. Madden NFL 11 embraces the TV broadcast presentation in a way I haven’t seen in years. Since Madden made the jump to Xbox 360 in Madden NFL 2006, the focus on how the game was supposed to be viewed shifted from a clear, Sunday TV perspective to listening to a radio broadcast from the bleachers in the stadium. Since that entry in the series I’ve felt that Madden’s presentation has been lackluster and it under-utilizes the ESPN exclusivity license EA has held for years now. (I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, NFL 2K5’s ESPN broadcast integration is the benchmark I hold all football videogame broadcast presentations up to.)

Microsoft Explains How Xbox 360 Achievements Work

Posted by admin On July - 18 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Xbox 360Love them, hate them, or be completely indifferent toward them, but in every case Achievements have become a permanent fixture in modern gaming since the launch of the Xbox 360. And in a new Xbox Engineering Blog post, Xbox Live and platform architect Vince Curley gives a detailed explanation of how the Achievements system works, as well as divulges some surprising facts behind their creation — including that the now-infamous “Achievement unlocked” toast and sound effect was a last-minute addition that almost never existed.

Curley explains that although a key aspect of Xbox Live is the consistency you see across all games, they still wanted to give game developers leeway in making their own unique presentations, which is why the Achievement “toast” almost never came to be. “Some people argued that gamers wouldn’t want the toast popping up in the heat of battle and that game designers would want to use their own visual style to present achievements,” Curley writes. “Others argued for consistency and for reducing the work required of game developers. In the end we added the notification popup and its happy beep, which turned out to be the right decision, but for a long time it was anything but obvious.”

Curley also recalls how the Achievement system was not “well understood” by developers early on, partly because Microsoft failed to give enough early guidance. “Because of this, early implementations of achievements were inconsistent and not as good as they could have been,” Curley writes. “Some games did the minimum required: 5 achievements which were tossed out for basically just starting the game. Some games made the achievements way too hard or too easy. Our developer support team has done an amazing job of providing guidance, including creating a 21-page, 8,000 word whitepaper on best practices for achievements.”

Kindle vs. Move: The Japan Perspective

Posted by admin On June - 30 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Kinect/Wii/Move

If you think the rhetoric between Microsoft and Sony regarding their new console controllers was a bit heated during E3, you’ll be amused to know that it’s pretty much the same deal over in Japan.

In fact, the way Xbox Japan general manager Takashi Sensui sees it, his company’s Kinect device is nothing short of the platform’s future. “The Kinect can truly be called a relaunch for the Xbox 360,” he told Famitsu magazine in an interview published this week, “and we have high expectations for it in the Japan market as well. We see Kinect as a device that’ll herald a new era in the world of interactive entertainment — not just in games, but in other areas going into the future. The technology will fundamentally change the user interface between man and machine.”

This despite the fact that Microsoft was criticized by 1UP and the rest of the media for a lack of non-casual games at the E3 show. “We are trying to appeal to the casual audience at first, certainly,” Sensui admitted. “There are 40 million Xbox 360s sold worldwide, and if we want to attract an even broader audience, we need to gear ourselves toward people who haven’t played games before. Still, I think the Kinect will give more passionate game fans new experiences to enjoy very soon as well, and I’m sure creators worldwide are thinking about that.”
